Alexandria University’s Council of Graduate Studies and Research, headed by Dr. Hisham Saeed, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, held its meeting this morning, Monday, April 22, 2024. During the meeting, the council discussed the proposal for mechanisms and procedures to implement the recommendations of the “Challenges Facing Scientific Research” report at Alexandria University.
 
 
 
Dr. Saeed confirmed that In light of the work of the seven regional alliances of Egyptian universities, a proposal to form committees for regional alliances with regard to scientific research will be presented, as the Supreme Committee for Scientific Research will be formed for the Egyptian university regions (which includes the representatives of graduate studies and research from the universities of each region and includes members representing industry, business owners and banks in each region). An executive committee for scientific research will also be formed (which includes the coordinators of the regional universities for scientific research).

Dr. Saeed also announced the role of the Supreme Committee, which is to propose the seven regions’ work strategy, follow up on the executive framework of the strategy, present proposals for developing the executive plan, and propose executive plans for national projects within each region. It will also activate the role of national alliances to increase cooperation between universities, the industrial sector and state institutions within the scope of each alliance, involving development partners from industry, business owners and banks in the alliances, proposing a research plan related to local community issues and studying the problems and challenges related to them, while presenting the results of the research points committed to by each university on a regular basis.
 
 
 
 
The Supreme Committee will also be responsible for holding an international conference for each alliance to present research points in the alliance’s universities, and to maximize the benefit from all the material capabilities available in the region, represented by infrastructure, laboratories, and modern equipment, as well as establishing companies and incubators in each region. The role of these companies is to contract with major chemical companies and material related to applied scientific research and establishing a warehouse for these companies within each of the alliances to sell and distribute their products on a regular and continuous basis within the universities, research centres and various institutes.
 
 
 
 
He added that the role of each Regional Executive Committee is to implement the Region’s plan regarding scientific research after all work is approved by the Supreme Committee of the Region. The Executive Committee seeks the assistance of other members from within the region's universities in implementing activities.
 
 
 
 
The Council approved a memorandum of understanding between the Faculty of Specific Education, Alexandria University, and the University of South Dakota in the United States of America in areas of common interest in science, arts and culture.
 
 
 
 
 The Council also agreed to create accounts for international students at the university on the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.

Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen, Acting Vice President of Alexandria University for Education and Student Affairs, discussed during the Education and Student Affairs Council meeting held today, Monday, April 22, 2024, preparations for the second semester final exams, stressing to the faculty vice deans the necessity of announcing the exam timetables through the faculties’ websites, provided that national holidays and various occasions are taken into consideration.

Dr. Abdelmohsen asked for the commitment of all faculty members and the supporting staff in the faculties to be present during the exams, and to follow up on the students’ commitment to the guidelines and directives followed within the exam halls to ensure discipline and the success of the examination work. He also stressed the importance of complete regularity in control work to complete the processes of exam grading, monitoring, and revision of the results before announcing them for students as soon as possible. He stressed the importance of providing an appropriate climate with all logistical needs for students, and equipping the halls with everything that ensures their comfort while taking the exams.

• Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen congratulated Dr. Magda Mohamed Abdelfattah Madbouly, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computers and Data Science, for being appointed by Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, as Acting Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computers and Data Science for Education and Student Affairs, wishing her the utmost success and progress.
 
 
• The Council discussed the Faculty of Medicine’s proposals to change the name of the Faculty’s Pathology Department to the Department of Anatomical Pathology and to change the name of the Faculty’s Department of Tropical Medicine to the Department of Endemic and Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine.

The Board of Trustees of Alexandria University’s faculties and institutes held its meeting today, Sunday, April 21, 2024, headed by Mr. Mohamed Fathi Abul-Nasr, Secretary-General of the University, where it reviewed with the faculty secretaries the completion of administrative preparations for the final examinations of the second semester of the academic year 2023/2024, and the necessity of commitment to administrative discipline and excellent performance, so that the monitoring and observation work is carried out in the most complete manner.

 The Council discussed the administrative role of faculties in preparing to participate in the “Egypt Award for Governmental Excellence - Fourth Session 2024” competition, with the aim of encouraging individual and institutional competition to spread the culture of excellence in the university’s administrative apparatus.

Based on Alexandria University’s keenness to do its part in community service, and under the auspices of Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, and Staff Major General Hisham Hosni, Commander of the Northern Military Region, Alexandria University participated, in cooperation and coordination with the Northern Military Region Command, in the integrated medical service convoy, to Bashayer El-Kheir area, in the period from 1 to 7 March, where all aspects of medical and humanitarian care were provided for cases requiring treatment within Alexandria University Hospitals.

Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Acting Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs indicated that Alexandria University Hospitals received 32 medical cases referred from Bashayer El-Kheir convoy, and all medical services were provided to them, which included examinations in specialized clinics and the necessary treatment, as well as necessary therapeutic interventions.

Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, announced the results of QS World University Rankings for the year 2024. It includes a ranking of the best 15,559 universities in the world. The basic majors included five sectors of science (Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management), in addition to more than 90 sub-specializations.
 
 
Alexandria University was highly ranked globally in 18 sub-specializations, as follows:
*Alexandria University ranked (51-70) globally in the field of library and information management.
*In the field of agriculture and forestry: Alexandria University ranked (201-250).
*In the field of architecture and built environment: Alexandria University ranked (201-240) globally.
*In the field of biological sciences: Alexandria University achieved rank (401-450) globally.
*In the field of chemistry: Alexandria University ranked (451-500) globally.
*In the field of computer science and information systems: Alexandria University ranked (501-550) globally.
*In the field of chemical engineering: Alexandria University ranked (251-300) globally.
*In the field of civil and structural engineering: Alexandria University ranked (151-200) globally.

The university president indicated that the QS World Ranking is based on four indicators: the academic reputation of the discipline offered by the program, the reputation of graduates, the volume of citations from research, and the network of published research among researchers belonging to more than one country.
He pointed out that Alexandria University’s high ranking this year is considered the result of joint efforts between all members of Alexandria University to improve the competitiveness of the scientific research system at the university. He added that Alexandria University pays special attention to research fields that fit the requirements of international rankings and to improve the outputs of scientific research produced at the university, by stimulating scientific publishing in top-ranked academic journals, and implementing cooperation protocols with major international universities, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, linking the research output with industry, and directing scientific research to serve society. The university president also praised the role of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank in providing the huge amount of scientific resources necessary for researchers in order to enhance scientific research in Egypt, and improving the classification of universities, institutions, and research centres internationally.
