Alexandria University Organizes Educational Seminar on World Diabetes Awareness Day
Under the auspices of Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, Dr. Saeed Allam, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, inaugurated today the educational seminar held on the occasion of World Diabetes Awareness Day, preventive and diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic measures for disease cases, and the most important advice for diabetics. The seminar was attended by a group of deans and vice deans of faculties, faculty members, employees, and students in the conference hall at the Faculty of Nursing.
In his speech, Dr. Saeed Allam stressed the university’s keenness to organize educational seminars within the framework of the university’s active participation in the presidential initiative “A New Beginning to Build the Egyptian Person,” which is concerned with building the person in all aspects of life in general and in the fields of health and education in particular. He pointed out that today’s celebration included lectures to introduce diabetes, its causes, symptoms and complications, and the preventive and therapeutic measures for the disease. He recommended that students exercise, maintain their weight, avoid bad eating habits, and follow a safe, healthy lifestyle through healthy food and physical activity, avoid tobacco use, early detection and periodic examinations to detect diabetes, and healthy and therapeutic treatment in the pre-diabetes stage.
For her part, Dr. Nefertiti Hassan Zaki, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, pointed out the importance of raising awareness of diabetes, given the presence of millions of people suffering from this disease, which has had a negative impact on their physical health, to acknowledge the urgent need to continue efforts to improve human health and provide access to treatment and health education. She explained that Alexandria University, in light of the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration that November 14 of each year is World Diabetes Day, is raising the necessary awareness through its scientific cadres and the participation of all societal parties by implementing several activities to spread awareness and health culture related to this disease.
Dr. Gihan Desouky, Professor of Internal and Surgical Nursing Department at the Faculty of Nursing, explained that diabetes is one of the most widespread chronic diseases in the world, with more than 500 million people affected, which negatively affects public health and causes a huge burden on health and economic systems. According to the latest official statistics, Egypt has the highest number of diabetics among Arab countries, reaching 10.9 million people in 2021.
The seminar included presentations by Dr. Iman Youssef, Professor of Internal Medicine and Diabetes and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Education and Student Affairs, and Dr. Salwa El-Badri, Head of the Department of Internal and Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, to introduce diabetes and how to control it. In the same context, several medical units were organized to measure blood pressure, sugar, height and weight in various faculties of the university with the aim of early detection of blood pressure, diabetes and obesity among students.
Opening of nominations for student union elections at Alexandria University today
Alexandria University, headed by Dr. Abdel Aziz Konsowa, President of the University, announced the completion of all preparations for the start of student union elections for the academic year 2024/2025, which starts today, Thursday, November 14, according to the schedule approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Dr. Ali Abdel Mohsen, Acting Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, announced that "Students for Egypt - Alexandria University" launched an activity this morning in front of the university administration building to encourage all Alexandria University students to participate in the student elections, explaining that a central committee has been formed to follow up on the progress of student union elections in their various stages, and subcommittees in the colleges to follow up and supervise the elections and overcome the obstacles facing students, indicating that the initial lists will be announced on November 17, appeals will be received on November 18, appeals will be examined on November 19, and the final lists will be announced on November 20, and the election campaign will begin on November 21, and the first round of elections will be held in the colleges, sorting and announcing the results on November 24, and the runoff will be held on November 25, then the elections of committee secretaries and their assistants will be held at the college level on November 26, and the elections of the union president and his deputy will be held at the college level on November 27, so that the student elections will end with the election of committee secretaries and their assistants and the president and vice president of the university union on November 28.
Dr. Ali Abdel Mohsen stressed that the colleges will hold several awareness meetings and seminars to encourage students to participate in the student elections, whether by running or casting their votes, announcing the papers required for candidacy, explaining in detail the method of application, and explaining the role played by each committee of the student union, whether it is a roving, social, artistic, scientific, sports or student families committee, to facilitate students to choose what suits them to run for, pointing out the need to encourage students to interact positively, increase cultural awareness, and consolidate the values of democracy and a sense of loyalty and belonging to the homeland.
President of Alexandria University Inaugurates the 23rd International Dental Conference
Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, inaugurated the 23rd International Dental Conference, in the presence of Dr. Mohamed Diaa, President of Ain Shams University, Dr. Essam El-Kurdi, President of El Alamein International University, Dr. Mahmoud Mohi El-Din, President of Pharos University, as well as the heads of Al-Salam and Sinai Universities, the General Syndicate of Dentists, a number of members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Vice Presidents of Egyptian Universities, and participants from Arab and foreign countries.

In his speech during the opening of the conference, Dr. Konsowa stressed that the success story within the Faculty of Dentistry is part of the success stories taking place within Alexandria University, stressing that Alexandria University works institutionally to serve the educational process. He announced that Alexandria University currently has 52 double degrees with major international universities and aims to reach 87 degrees by the end of the academic year. Dr. Konsowa added that the university also seeks to establish international branches, in line with the state's vision for higher education, alongside Alexandria Public University and external branches in Chad and South Sudan, all with quality education and global competitiveness.
Dr. Konsowa also pointed to the importance of scientific research, stressing the need for scientific research to serve the economy and society. At the end of his speech, Dr. Konsowa announced the launch of an initiative within Alexandria University funded by the university's own resources with a value of 30 million Egyptian pounds to finance a group of research and creative ideas for Alexandria University members, and part of these ideas will be the launch of the technology park for Alexandria University. He called for coming out of this conference with recommendations that can be implemented in the form of start-up companies or know how to serve the industry.

Dr. Ahmed Abdelhakim, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Chairman of the Conference, pointed out that this year's conference is characterized by a great scientific momentum represented by the participation of a large number of Egyptian, Arab and foreign universities, stressing the interest of the political leadership in the issues of development and scientific research, as the Ministry of Higher Education launched the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research to achieve the goals of developing education and raising its quality. He added that the Faculty of Dentistry seeks to implement the goals of the strategy in terms of developing and updating curricula, programs, examination systems and evaluation, as the philosophy of the Faculty is to establish a distinguished structure for practical and academic dental sciences according to the highest international standards in quality and scientific research for its students.

Dr. Mohamed Moataz Khamis, Professor at the Faculty and Conference Rapporteur, confirmed that this conference is one of the most important conferences in Egypt and the Middle East thanks to the efforts of the participating professors, and this year it includes 80 professors and researchers from 23 countries to present research and ideas, improve the services provided and cooperate with distinguished local and international scientific entities, with the aim of enhancing the exchange of knowledge and reviewing the latest modern technologies in the field of dentistry and providing advanced solutions to the challenges facing this field.
The conference hosts more than 80 lecturers and the conference program includes lectures rich in important topics on modern dental implant techniques, jaw tumor treatment, and 3D printing techniques (CADCAM), which reflects the remarkable development in the use of modern medical technology. The lectures also focus on topics of interest to a wide segment of attendees, such as dental aesthetics, the risks of smoking on oral health, and orthodontics for children.
At the end of the opening ceremony, the university president honored the presidents and vice presidents of universities, participants from different countries, and members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.



Alexandria University Receives University of Chicago's Associate Dean
Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, received yesterday Dr. Dina Rashed, Associate Dean of the College for Academic Affairs at the University of Chicago in the United States of America, with the aim of developing academic cooperation between the two sides on topics of common interest.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Ahmed Wahban, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, and Dr. Osama El-Adly, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Education and Student Affairs.

During the meeting, Dr. Konsowa welcomed the attendees, stressing Alexandria University's keenness to consolidate cooperation with American universities in various scientific fields, referring to the extended relations and joint academic degrees with many American universities such as Virginia Tech, Alabama, and Louisville Universities. He pointed to the university's strategy towards establishing many dual and joint academic degrees with highly ranked international universities in order to provide a distinguished educational service and graduate a generation capable of competing in local, regional, and international labor markets. He expressed his aspiration to increase this cooperation in the fields of education, scientific research, innovation, and the establishment of joint academic degrees and the exchange of faculty members and students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
For her part, Dr. Dina Rashed praised the distinguished level of students and graduates of Alexandria University, nand pointed out the academic excellence of students of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science who received scholarships to study at the University of Chicago for a year, stressing the University of Chicago’s keenness to develop joint cooperation with Alexandria University in the fields of educational programs and joint research projects in various academic disciplines.
Dr. Hisham Saeed Attends Annual Training on Using Egyptian Knowledge Bank in Egyptian Universities at Faculty of Nursing
Under the auspices of Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, Dr. Hisham Saeed, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, witnessed today, Monday, November 11, 2024, the annual training on the use of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank in Egyptian universities, which is organized by the Supreme Council of Universities, in the Blue Hall at the Faculty of Nursing.
The lecture was attended by Dr. Nefertiti Zaki, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Dr. Awatef El-Sharkawy, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Alaa Gaafar, Director of the Digital Library Unit, Dr. Walid Ali, Representative of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, Dr. Mahmoud Shawky, Representative of the Digital Library at the Supreme Council of Universities, in addition to representatives of international and Arab publishing houses, a group of faculty members and researchers from various Egyptian universities, and directors of libraries of Alexandria University faculties.

In his speech, Dr. Hisham Saeed stressed the importance of benefiting from the Egyptian Knowledge Bank as a national project launched by the Egyptian government in 2016, which is a major qualitative leap in providing multiple and free knowledge sources for students, teachers, employees of Egyptian universities, researchers and the general public. He pointed out that the project, since its launch, has been one of the largest digital libraries in the world because it provides scientific, cultural and educational content available online at all times and covers a wide range of disciplines and fields such as natural sciences, technology, arts, history and other specializations.
Saeed added that one of the most prominent features of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank is that it provides scientific content in partnership with international institutions and major publishing houses such as Elsevier and others, which allows users to access scientific articles, research and educational references as well as multimedia such as educational videos and illustrations, which leads to enhancing education in Egypt, supporting scientific research and developing the intellectual skills of students and researchers, which enables them to access documented and modern knowledge sources that serve their research and studies. He pointed out that the Egyptian Knowledge Bank is a pioneering step towards building a knowledge-based society and creating an educational environment that supports innovation and contributes to preparing generations that possess the ability to think critically and contribute to the sustainable development of Egypt. In addition, the Knowledge Bank is considered a portal that supports many Egyptian journals in Egyptian universities, which is a pioneering step to bring these periodicals to the world.

While Dr. Nefertiti Zaki confirmed that digital libraries are the libraries of the future in light of the general trend in the world towards the electronic world and digital content, she pointed out that the importance of the digital library is due to its ability to preserve its holdings in machine-readable forms, obtain information easily, eliminate the time and space barrier, shorten distances, reduce financial costs and enable more than one person to view information at the same time without damage t,o the scientific content of the information. She also pointed out that Alexandria University’s Digital Library is one of the university’s development projects, aiming to develop the work of the library, making all scientific and research technologies available in digital form in order to integrate with learning and information institutions in higher education, under the umbrella of the digital library at the Supreme Council of Universities, to reach the dissemination of the culture of sustainability and link it to scientific research, enhance information awareness, and build a digital environment that keeps pace with scientific developments.

Dr. Alaa Gaafar pointed out that the Egyptian Knowledge Bank is an effective tool that supports the aspirations of academics, researchers, university students and library specialists in Egypt, and contributes to enriching scientific research. She stressed that the large attendance at this annual training reflects everyone's interest in the importance and role of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and the Digital Library Unit and the keenness to contribute to the development of scientific research in Egypt, especially since the workshop has been held over the past eight years, which is the age of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, one of the most important pioneering national achievements in Egypt.

Representatives of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and the Digital Library at the Supreme Council of Universities explained how to create an account on the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and how to manage it, the instructions for the procedures for applying for impact factor reports and citation checks, how to use the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and the academic search engine, a detailed explanation of the most important databases available through the bank, and an explanation of the research tools and software available through the bank.
