Under the auspices of Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, and Dr. Mahmoud El-Kheshen, Academic Supervisor of Alexandria National University, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Tamer Helmy, Advisor to the Student Union, the Sports Committee of the Alexandria National University Student Union organized the first sports marathon for university students, and it was held under the slogan “Run for Your Health”.” It started from the end of the Sidi Gaber Bridge westwards along the sea road to the Silsila Tower downtown, and at the end of the marathon, the winners were honoured as follows:
• Ahmed Abdellatif - Faculty of Science – First Place (Male Students)
• Iman Abdelhadi – Faculty of Dentistry - First Place (Female Students)
• Omar Abdallah -Faculty of Engineering – Second Place (Male Students)
• Shahd Magdy - Faculty of Engineering - Second Place (Female Students)
• Mohamed Ashraf - Faculty of Computers – Third Place (Male Students)
• Judy Mohamed - Faculty of Engineering – Third Place (female Students)
Prizes were also distributed to all students participating in the marathon.

His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, received today the Board of Trustees of Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which includes an elite group of prominent Egyptian and international figures, including Dr. Magdi Yacoub, Dr. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu, former Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Mrs. Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary-General of the International Organization of La Francophonie, Mr. Miguel Moratinos, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative of the Alliance of Civilizations at the United Nations, Dr. Mohamed bin Issa, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture of Morocco, Sheikha Mai bint Mohamed Al Khalifa, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Sheikh Ibrahim bin Mohamed Al Khalifa Centre in Bahrain, Ms. Amina Mohamed, former Minister of Culture of Kenya, Ms. Samia Nkrumah, Dr. Mofid Shehab, Engineer Hani Azer, and Mr. Mohamed Salmawi, President of the Egyptian Writers Union. The meeting was attended by Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Nevin El-Kilani, Minister of Culture, Mr. Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Major General Mohamed El-Sherif, Governor of Alexandria, Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, and Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
 
 
 
 
During the meeting, President El-Sisi welcomed the members of the Board of Trustees, stressing the importance of the valuable role played by the Library of Alexandria in disseminating and deepening knowledge and science, as well as encouraging reading, research and cultural work, in a way that supports dialogue between civilizations and deepens common understanding and coexistence among peoples. He noted that realizing the importance and richness of diversity Human rights, and devoting the principles of citizenship, is the basis for protecting the societal fabric, stressing the need for the library to complete the mission that Egypt performs in building bridges between cultures, and in establishing peace and development.
 
 
 
 
 
Mr. President also stressed the state’s keenness for the library to provide innovative ideas and activities, work to deepen scientific and cultural interests among young people, and contribute practically to qualifying them to assume the responsibilities of the future, by simplifying science using innovative technological methods, and supporting the culture of creativity and innovation at the scientific level. technical and artistic fields, discovering talented children and youth, as well as creating knowledge and deepening the relationship between scientific research and technical development, with a focus on consolidating the Egyptian identity through various library programmes, indicating the state’s keenness to provide full support for all cultural projects aimed at innovative and effective visions to support young people and adolescents.
 
 
 
 
 
On their part, the members of the Board of Trustees appreciated the continuous support they receive from the state to ensure that the library fulfils its historical cultural role, praising the interest that Mr. President personally gives to the work of the library. In this context, they presented their visions regarding the various roles that the library can play, to achieve its goals as Egypt’s gateway to the world and the world’s window on Egypt, its rich culture, and its extended history.
 
 
 
 
 
The meeting also witnessed an open discussion about the international and regional situation, where the Board of Trustees praised the pivotal role played by Egypt to restore stability in the region, end the war in Gaza and bring humanitarian aid to the residents of the Strip. For his part, Mr. President affirmed Egypt’s keenness to stop the bloodshed in the Strip, and the continued positive contribution. In advancing efforts to resolve crises in the region, stressing that consolidating a culture of peace is an essential element for a more stable and secure future for the region and the world.

Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen, Acting Vice President for Education and Student Affairs honoured this morning, Monday, May 20, 2024, the Alexandria University team that won third place in the Arab Toxicology Cup Competition, which was held in Al-Khobar, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on the sidelines of the “Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities in Pharmacy and Toxicology” Conference. Alexandria University team participated in the competition among 20 universities from 12 different Arab countries from all over the Middle East. The competition took place in three stages, and its questions were based on toxicology and simulations of clinical cases exposed to toxins, and how to deal with them.
 
 
 
The winning team included the pharmacist supervisor, Mohamed Abdelnabi Ibrahim, Teaching Assistant at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, and students Nada Mahmoud Arafat Qabil, fifth year student at the Faculty of Pharmacy, and Nesma Saeed Abdelqader, fifth year student at the Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen, Acting Vice President of Alexandria University for Education and Student Affairs, stressed to all faculties’ vice deans the importance of taking the necessary procedures and measures to complete the second semester final exams and overcome all obstacles so that the exam process can be completed with ease. This came during the Education and Student Affairs Council meeting held today morning, Monday, May 20, 2024.
Dr. Abdelmohsen confirmed that the university is following up on the examination process through an operations room that is working around the clock. He pointed out that the university has assigned the medical department to be fully prepared and prepare well-equipped ambulances in anticipation of any health crises occurring for students during the examination period. He also directed the vice deans to ensure good air ventilation inside the examination rooms to confront the heat wave the country is experiencing.
 
 
Within the framework of the university’s role in supporting student activities, Dr. Abdelmohsen thanked the General Administration of Youth Welfare and the Student Union for their efforts in organizing various cultural, artistic, and sporting events with the aim of supporting and adopting talent. Some of these events included the Theatre Department Festival for departments and specialized institutes in its 17th session. He pointed out that the university is in the process of turning the festival into an international one as of next year, to receive all student talents from various nationalities. Another important event organized was “Our Health in Our Planet Marathon” in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, where the students who won the first ten places were honoured.
 
 
 
• Within the framework of the university’s role in supporting and developing medical services, the Council approved the proposal to establish a paediatric surgery department and take the necessary measures, with the aim of developing comprehensive medical services in the field of paediatric surgery and raising the level of health care provided to children.

Under the auspices of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, Dr. Hisham Saeed, Vice President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, inaugurated today, Saturday, May 18, 2024, the activities of the First International Conference on Advances in Science for Sustainable Development (ICASSD 2024), which is organized by the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research and continues for two days at the Institute’s headquarters.
 
 
 
 
 
The opening session was attended by Dr. Yousry El-Gamal, former Minister of Education, Dr. Ahmed Abdelrehim, Acting Dean of the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research, and a group of deans and vice deans of Alexandria University’s faculties and institutes, faculty members, researchers, industry representatives, and students.

In his speech, Dr. Hisham Saeed stressed that the conference aims to harness science and technology to confront the challenges facing our world today. Dr. Saeed stressed that successive scientific developments have begun to play a pivotal role in finding solutions to pressing issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and environmental degradation. He added that science must be utilised in order to achieve sustainable development, from renewable energy technologies and sustainable smart agriculture practices to great achievements in preserving the environment and resilient infrastructure. He pointed out that we must harness scientific disciplines from biology and chemistry to engineering and social sciences to develop comprehensive solutions that work to find a balance between environmental safety, economic welfare and social justice. He added that cooperation between different disciplines has become necessary in addressing complex sustainability challenges, through strengthening partnerships between scientists, policy makers, and civil society. At the end of his speech, Dr. Hisham Saeed called on all attending researchers and students to benefit from the activities The conference is to exchange knowledge among themselves to serve sustainable development, especially since the conference witnesses the presence of many scientists and researchers around the world.

While Dr. Yousry El-Gamal confirmed that the conference discusses the topical issue of harnessing science in the service of sustainable development, which is one of the most important pillars of the Egyptian State Strategy 2030. He pointed out that Alexandria University is a pioneer in organizing unique conferences, being also a pioneer in establishing a Department of Nuclear Engineering and a Department of Computer Engineering to create inter-disciplinary and unique specializations that are consistent with the goals of sustainable development. Dr. El-Gamal expressed his hopes that the conference comes up with recommendations that serve the goals of sustainable development and create a more sustainable world.

Dr. Ahmed Abdelrehim indicated that the conference aims to identify and promote concrete opportunities and partnerships that would benefit from science and the community to accelerate progress in the main areas of the 2030 Plan by bringing together policy makers, researchers and academics. It also aims to enhance dialogue, exchange best practices, and develop implementable strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He added that despite the great scientific support for the Sustainable Development Goals, progress has been slow. Hence, the conference was organized to bridge this gap, promote the optimal use of science, technology, and innovation, and adopt a qualitative shift in the way we conduct scientific research for the sake of sustainability and moving away from traditional, isolated and competitive models, prioritizing the generation of applicable knowledge that leads to tangible scientific results.
 
 
 
 
Three sessions were held today. The first session included a talk about “Developments in Science through Modern trends in Scientific Research and their Applications,” and was chaired by Dr. Mustafa Hassan Mustafa, Professor of Biochemistry and Partial Carcinogenicity, and the second session was entitled “Applications of Biotechnology and Its Impact on Sustainable Development,” and was chaired by Dr. Sherif Hassan Qandil, Professor in the Department of Materials Science, while the third session was entitled “The Effects of Nanotechnology on Modern Science and Extending Them to Sustainable Development Applications.”
