Under the auspices of Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Acting President of Alexandria University, and the supervision of Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen, Acting Vice President for Education and Student Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University, organized a graduation ceremony for the 83rd batch of international students in the general program for the academic year 2023/2024.
 
 
The event took place in the presence of Dr. Iman Youssef, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Education and Student Affairs, Dr. Tamer Abdallah, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Environmental Affairs and Community Service, Dr. Hala Maklad, Executive Director of the University's International Students Department, Dr. Abdelmoneim Fawzy, Head of the Doctors Syndicate in Alexandria, in addition to several deans and vice deans of faculties, heads of departments, faculty members, a number of consuls, ambassadors, diplomatic missions, and parents.
 
 
 
In her speech, Dr. Iman Youssef congratulated the international students on their graduation, stressing that the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University, is a large institution with a good international reputation on the “Study in Egypt” platform, which students from all over the world seek to belong to and graduate from. She also thanked the students for their efforts and hard work throughout their years of study, pointing out the challenges and difficulties they faced, the most important of which is their distance from their families and homeland. She said that Egypt was their second homeland, and that today is the day of the oath, after which they will be doctors of the future and ambassadors of Egypt in their countries. She stressed that the faculty administration will support them in their future practical and professional career and will open its doors to learning, whether in the mandatory training year as interns or postgraduate students. She also thanked the parents, stressing that today is the day of harvest for their children, as they reap the fruits of their struggle and efforts throughout the years of study to become doctors whose parents are proud of, and who will contribute to building their countries.

Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, the High Institute of Public Health organized on Monday, October 27, 2025, a scientific conference entitled “Antimicrobial Resistance: Current Situation and Challenges.” The event witnessed wide participation from representatives of governmental bodies, international organizations, and Egyptian universities.

The conference was attended by Prof. Dr. Hesham Saeed, Vice President of Alexandria University for Graduate Studies and Research; Prof. Dr. Heba El-Qady, Dean of the High Institute of Public Health; Prof. Dr. Amr Kandil, Deputy Minister of Health and Population for Preventive Medicine; Dr. Jacqueline Benat, Representative of the Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); Dr. Mohamed Farid Hamdy, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate; Dr. Mohamed Badran, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Alexandria; and Dr. Sameh Riyad, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment in Alexandria, along with vice-deans of the Institute, experts, academics, and faculty members from various faculties of Alexandria University.

The conference sessions were presented by Prof. Dr. Ibrahim El-Kordany, distinguished scholar at the Institute and former official spokesperson of the World Health Organization (WHO), while the discussion panel was moderated by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mandil, Professor of Epidemiology at the Institute.

High-level representatives from the Ministries of Health and Population, Agriculture, and Environment, the Egyptian Drug Authority, the General Organization for Veterinary Services, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate, and international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the American University in Cairo, and the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network also took part in the event.

The conference addressed several key themes, including:

Analysis of the global, regional, and national situation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR);

Improving practices across healthcare, food production, and environmental sectors;

Promoting infection prevention and control within the framework of the “One Health” approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Hesham Saeed emphasized that the conference reflects Alexandria University’s and the Institute’s pioneering role in supporting applied scientific research and tackling priority public health issues nationally and globally. He stated that antimicrobial resistance represents one of the most serious threats to global public health, as it leads to treatment difficulties, increased disease and mortality rates, and higher economic burdens. He explained that the excessive and uncontrolled use of antibiotics in humans and animals, as well as their use in agriculture and aquaculture as growth promoters, has accelerated the development of resistant microbial strains. Dr. Saeed stressed the importance of strengthening regulations governing antibiotic use, enforcing safe disposal of medical waste, and addressing the global decline in the discovery of new antimicrobial agents.

Prof. Dr. Amr Kandil highlighted that the conference aligns with the Ministry of Health’s efforts to curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance and enhance healthcare quality. He referred to the National Plan to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance, launched in 2023, which has been implemented in 96 hospitals nationwide, with six hospitals being upgraded to international Centers of Excellence in infection control.

For her part, Prof. Dr. Heba El-Qady noted that antimicrobial resistance is among the greatest public health threats worldwide, leading to loss of treatment efficacy, increased mortality rates, and higher healthcare costs. She emphasized that AMR is not only a medical issue but also a societal one that requires close collaboration among all sectors within the “One Health” framework. She added that the conference aims to enhance research cooperation and develop effective national and regional strategies to curb the spread of resistant microbes and promote the rational use of antibiotics.

In a recorded message, Dr. Nehme Abed, WHO Representative in Egypt, stressed the need for joint efforts across health, environmental, and agricultural sectors under the “One Health” approach. He warned that antimicrobial resistance could cause more than 10 million deaths by 2050, highlighting the close cooperation between the WHO and the Egyptian government in implementing the national AMR action plan.

Dr. Jacqueline Benat, FAO Representative, underscored the importance of examining the impact of antimicrobial resistance not only on humans but also on the environment and livestock. She emphasized the necessity of integrated collaboration among all sectors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Sameh Riyad, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment in Alexandria, stressed the need to consider the environmental determinants of antimicrobial resistance—particularly regarding fisheries, water resources, and waste disposal from hospitals and healthcare centers—and highlighted the Ministry’s efforts in cooperation with other sectors to address this issue comprehensively.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mohamed Farid Hamdy, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate, and Dr. Abdel Moneim Fawzy, Head of the Alexandria Medical Syndicate, expressed the Syndicate’s full support for initiatives that promote better public health outcomes, hoping the conference’s recommendations will lead to tangible improvements benefiting Egyptian citizens.

Finally, the Department of Microbiology at the Institute presented a series of scientific research studies focused on antimicrobial resistance and potential alternative treatments explored through departmental research projects.

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting its graduates, preparing them for the job market, and promoting transparency and institutional governance, the Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria University organized the First Employment Forum for Young Doctors on the morning of Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Grand Conference Hall of the Faculty.

The event was attended by a number of distinguished academic and medical figures, including Prof. Hend Hanafy, former President of Alexandria University; Prof. Seddik Abdel Salam, former Vice President of the University; Prof. Mahmoud El-Zalabany, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Ali Abdel Mohsen, former Vice President of the University; Prof. Morsi Arab, Professor of Internal Medicine; and Prof. Abdel Moneim Fawzy, President of the Alexandria Medical Syndicate, along with a large number of faculty members, teaching assistants, and students.

Prof. Tamer Abdallah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, stated that the forum was characterized by rich and interactive discussions between professors and students, reflecting a strong sense of academic belonging and intergenerational connection within the Faculty. He added that the event contributes to preparing medical cadres capable of meeting the challenges of the labor market. The program included several specialized lectures, among them one delivered by Dr. Shaimaa Sabry Habib, Director of Training at the School of Health Affairs and Coordinator of the Egyptian Board, on professional development pathways for young doctors.

Prof. Eman Youssef, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, explained that the forum witnessed wide participation from students across all academic years, who showed great interest in the discussion sessions and professional lectures addressing career planning skills, medical training requirements, and mechanisms for joining the Egyptian Board. She added that the forum concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the leading role of the Faculty of Medicine in empowering young doctors, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for professional excellence, and fostering values of belonging, leadership, and innovation within the medical community.

The forum was organized under the supervision of Prof. Ahmed Zeid, Professor of Internal Medicine and Head of the Liver Transplantation Unit, with contributions from the organizing team: Dr. Ayat Al-Tayyar, Dr. Noran Al-Nemr, Dr. Mostafa Asal, Dr. Doaa Abu El-Dahab, Dr. Nesma Saeed, and Dr. Ahmed Hani.

As part of Alexandria University’s celebrations marking the anniversary of the Glorious October Victories, and under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of the University, the Faculty of Sports Science for Girls organized a ceremony on Monday, October 20, 2025, to commemorate this great national occasion—honoring the heroism of the Egyptian Armed Forces and their sacrifices that restored Egypt’s dignity and pride.

The celebration was attended by Dr. Doaa El-Dardiry Abou El-Hassan, Dean of the Faculty; Dr. Eman Mahmoud El-Sherif, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs; Dr. Sabrine Attia Morsal, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Naglaa Fathy Khalifa, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research; and Dr. Lamia El-Shafie, Coordinator of Voluntary Activities at Alexandria University. The event also witnessed the presence of several faculty members, heads of academic departments, and students participating in various student activities.

The celebration began with the Egyptian national anthem, followed by a welcoming speech by the Dean, who greeted all guests and participants, affirming that the October War anniversary will always remain a source of pride and inspiration for future generations, as it embodies the spirit of patriotism, determination, and perseverance.

The program included an awareness seminar delivered by Major General Gamal El-Din Mohamed Rashad, former Head of Armament of the Egyptian Air Force, entitled “The Heroics of October: Then and Now.” In his lecture, he reviewed the stages of preparation for victory from 1967 until the great crossing on October 6, 1973. He emphasized that this day will forever be a shining milestone in Egyptian and Arab history, reflecting the will and capability of Egyptians to achieve the impossible.

Following the seminar, students of the Faculty presented a musical operetta titled “Tahya Misr” (Long Live Egypt), expressing deep feelings of pride and national belonging. This was followed by a patriotic musical performance by the Alexandria University Choir and Music Ensemble, under the supervision of the Cultural and Artistic Activities Department at the General Administration of Youth Welfare.

At the end of the celebration, the Dean expressed her sincere appreciation to all participants and organizers, praising the students and the university choir for their outstanding artistic performances that reflected a strong sense of national identity. She affirmed that the Faculty will continue to organize purposeful events that foster patriotism and loyalty among students.
