In a new step reflecting the leadership of Alexandria University and its university hospitals in introducing the latest therapeutic technologies for structural heart diseases, the Department of Cardiology at the Faculty of Medicine – Alexandria University successfully organized and conducted a specialized workshop on Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) at the Cardiac Catheterization Unit of Smouha University Hospital. This achievement highlights the continuous progress in providing healthcare services in accordance with the highest international standards.

Dr. Ahmed Adel Abdel Hakim, Acting President of Alexandria University, congratulated the medical team on this accomplishment, emphasizing that the university continues its efforts to advance its medical and healthcare system by supporting specialized disciplines and providing cutting-edge technologies within its university hospitals. This contributes to improving healthcare services for citizens and strengthens Alexandria University’s position as a leading academic and medical institution that combines scientific excellence with its social and humanitarian mission.

In the same context, Dr. Tamer Abdallah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, stated that the university hospitals are continuously committed to keeping pace with the latest developments in diagnosis and treatment. He explained that the TAVI procedure represents a major advancement in treating elderly patients with aortic valve stenosis and high-risk cases, offering safe and effective treatment options for patients for whom traditional open-heart surgery poses significant health risks.

He further added that the Department of Cardiology at Alexandria University has been successfully implementing this advanced technology for nearly five years, during which the university hospitals have performed numerous successful procedures according to the highest international medical standards, achieving success rates comparable to leading specialized centers worldwide. He reaffirmed the ongoing support for medical professionals and the continuous enhancement of facilities and capabilities to improve the quality of healthcare services provided to patients.

During the workshop, the medical team successfully performed TAVI procedures on four elderly patients classified as high-risk candidates for conventional surgery. All procedures were completed successfully without any complications, and the patients recovered successfully.
