As part of Alexandria University's strategy to develop a knowledge-based industry, Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, received Dr. Sherine Abbas Helmy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pharco Pharmaceuticals Group. The delegation was accompanied by Dr. Giorgio Maracchioni, President of the Modern Life Sciences Foundation and President of the Higher Institute of Pharma Academy of the Italian Pharmaceutical Industries Federation; Dr. Amr Boseila, Head of the Central Administration for Technical Education Development at the Ministry of Education; and Engineer Khaled Sidrak, CEO of Q-3 Ventures and Projects. The meeting discussed ways to cooperate between these entities to produce modern medicines and register Egyptian-made pharmaceutical products in Italy, in preparation for entering the Italian market as a gateway to expansion into European Union markets, as well as investing in startups.
During the meeting, Dr. Konsowa welcomed the university guests, emphasizing the university's commitment to collaborating with industry through the Technology Park, which the university established to fund applicable scientific research, foster innovative initiatives and ideas, and support young people in their small and medium-sized enterprises. He emphasized that Alexandria University has allocated a budget of 500 million Egyptian pounds to fund this research, which will be increased over the coming years to link scientific research outcomes with industry.
The university president emphasized the university's commitment to establishing a mechanism for cooperation between the Technology Park at Alexandria University and its counterpart at the Pharma Academy in Italy, creating promising opportunities for the exchange of expertise and ideas between the two sides as a model for Euro-Mediterranean cooperation. He also emphasized the university's interest in collaborating between academia and the industrial community to serve Egyptian industry and achieve the university's goals of linking scientific research with industry, developing national competencies, and providing innovative solutions to address industrial challenges.
Dr. Sherine Abbas Helmy emphasized Pharco's commitment to collaborating with Alexandria University and enhancing cooperation and exchange of expertise in the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing. He pointed out the possibility of collaborating between the two sides to conduct joint research with the Italian side to produce medical products, register Egyptian medicines, and export them to European countries.
Dr. Maracchioni expressed his admiration for the diversity of Alexandria University's research activities, the university leadership's interest in applied research, its distinguished efforts in the field of industry-related research, and the advanced results it has achieved. He emphasized the Pharma Institute of Italy's commitment to cooperation in student exchange, training, and the qualification of Egyptian cadres.
Dr. Sameh Shehata, Dr. Hanan Goweily, and Dr. Iman Shawky gave presentations on Alexandria University, the Faculty of Pharmacy, modern pharmaceutical research, the scientific research strategy, funded research, and funding sources.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Hisham Saeed, Vice President of Alexandria University for Graduate Studies and Research; Dr. Sameh Shehata, Supervisor of the International Relations Office; Dr. Gihan Gewaifel, Assistant President for Internationalization of Education and International Branch Campuses; Dr. Hanan Goweily, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy; and Dr. Iman Shawky, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
