Industrial Microbiology&Applied Chemistry

IMAC aims to integrate educational resources across the participation of Microbiology and Chemistry staff members and Industry Experts to train talented group of students. Students with interdisciplinary training in both fields are in increasing demand in public and private sectors.  With the broad interdisciplinary training, students from this program will have excellent career options in academic, industrial, and governmental institutions.

Program structure

Bachelor degree in Industrial Microbiology & Applied Chemistry requires the student to successfully accomplish 136 credit hours including:

University general requirements:            10 credit hours

Faculty required courses:                      26 credit hours

Specialization compulsory courses:      70 credit hours (covering mainly: Chemistry & microbiology courses in addition to 6 credits for applied graduation project, and other necessary courses to provide students with professional skills in their fields)

Specialized elective courses:                30 credit hours (covering extra-courses in both disciplines)

IMAC program covers, the first 4 semesters, basic information in chemistry and microbiology, this includes the study of: Organic and Biological Chemistry, Organic Chemistry Laboratory I, Analytical Chemistry & Instrumental Methods of Analysis, Natural Products Raw Materials, Polymer Chemistry, Chemistry of Elements & Chemical Kinetics, MedicinalChemistry & Clinical Laboratory Methods,

Bacteriology, Virology and Mycology, Molecular Biology and Microbial Genetics, Microbial Metabolism, Fermentation Technology and Industrial Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, Petroleum Microbiology, Bioremediation, Food and Water Microbiology

The previous mentioned courses provide the student with information required to fulfill assignments in quality lab and quality management in many industries, therefore, courses such as Biostatistics and Quality Control & Lab Assessment.

Elective courses are also offered to give the student the chance to choose 30 credit hours according to his/her interest. These courses cover chemistry and/ or microbiology. The student can add information about new and recent trends in science to his/her, therefore, other courses are also offered including: Computer Applications and Statistics for Technology, Introduction to Nanotechnology and to Biophysics, Applied Radiochemistry, Management of Small Industries

Admission requirements:

Students are nominated for admission to the Faculty according to the general admission requirements of the Faculty of Science, Alexandria University, under the umbrella of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education. Students must hold a certificate accepted by the supreme Council of Egyptian Universities. All applications must fulfill the requirements of the desire major and submit all official credentials upon acceptance

Registration Procedures:

Students are required to register at the beginning of the first academic year during the assigned registration period. Registration takes place in the student affairs office (El Shatby Building). The registration office issues a regulation bulletin as well as the procedures to be followed. Full-time study is a requirement for all students. Each student in the program should be submitted for medical examination before the expiration of a period of 14 days from the beginning of the first academic year.

Tuition Fees

All tuition fees are payable in full, for the academic semester to which they relate, on registration. Examination fees are normally included, otherwise the student is not eligible on examination.

Student health

It is advisable for the students to enroll in the Faculty health insurance program in collaboration with the University Hospital. Students interested should contact the Student Affairs Office.

Language of acquisition

English is the medium of instruction.

Activities

The student may participate in scientific, social and entertainment activities generally offered by Alexandria University, Faculty of Science, Chemistry, and Botany & Microbiology Departments. Students also may share in foundation of student chapters, associations and/ or other teams that participate in organizing conferences, meetings and other extracurricular activities.

Student academic support

We aim to make sure from the start that you have access to any support you might need. We provide academic guiding by experienced and friendly staff members who are easy to contact. Program Coordinator is responsible for follow up of the student’s performance during each semester till graduation.
